Employers are being urged to double check that their smoking policies are complete in preparation for visits from smoking inspectors who could force costly legal proceedings upon non-compliant businesses.
New inspection figures released by the Government show that smoking inspectors issued 1,233 written warnings to employers for failing to prevent smoking in their premises between July and November last year.
The warnings led to eight court hearings. A further 6,646 warnings were issued to firms for not displaying correct “no smoking” signs in their premises or vehicles.
Lawyers are advising businesses to reiterate the nosmoking message to staff and issue a copy of the policy to all employees before taking legal advice on setting up alternative smoking areas outside, to check they do not contravene the law. |
