New EU regulations could mean big bills for companies involved in incidents which damage the environment. Expected to come

into force in December, a new directive will target any firm responsible for the source of toxic leaks and spills, fire damage or explosions and demand that immediate steps be taken to contain the situation. Polluting businesses will then be liable for the cost of decontaminating the affected areas or enhancing another site.

Managers should seek additional cover to fully protect their businesses and look into the environmental liability policies that are available.
