Businesses are being reminded to submit any claims for research and development (R&D) tax relief ahead of the March deadline. Due to changes in legislation, 31 March 2008 is the last opportunity for businesses to backclaim any R&D tax credits for the past six years. From 2008 claims will be assessed on a year-by-year basis.
For every £1 million spent on qualifying R&D, SMEs can deduct £1.5 million in tax relief or, in some cases, claim a cash payment of up to £240,000, whilst a large Advisors say a successful claim should document criteria clearly, explain new technologies in detail, calculate eligible expenditure and provide evidence of an audit trail.
