The British Open golf at Royal Birkdale was worth tens of millions of pounds to the local economy. Property advisers DTZ estimate that the 137th British Open held at Royal Birkdale last week generated more than £30 million for the Liverpool City Region’s economy. The 201,000 visitors to Royal Birkdale put this Open in the top three all time Open’s to be held away from St Andrews. The DTZ estimate covers expenditure by the spectators, tournament organisers, players and media. This is does not take into account the wider potential impact of such events in terms of international media exposure for the Liverpool City Region. John Adlen, director of DTZ in Liverpool comments: “The success of The Open is yet another feather in the City Region’s cap during the Capital of Culture Year and was as good for Liverpool city centre as it was for Southport. Much of the success of events like The Open and the Tall Ships Race can be attributed to the massive improvement in the city’s hotel offer over the last few years.” Adlen concludes: “The Open, together with the Tall Ships Race once again demonstrates Liverpool’s ability to successfully host world class sporting events which provide such a boost to the local economy”. |
