Poor posture can lead to a bad back. We all know that, right, but with heavy work loads, sitting up straight is surely the last thing on our minds. It’s good then that someone – or, rather, something – can now do it for us.
Manchester based Postureminder Ltd offers exactly what it says on the box – a software package that works with you and your computer, gently nagging you when you’re slouching, hunching, stooping or leaning – anything, basically, that could cause health problems. Posture Minder costs £49.99 per installation, but there are heavy discounts for bulk buys. For this, you get a webcam and software which captures a ‘reference image’ of you. Any default from that perfect posture will result in pop-up reminders, at a time setting chosen by you. Included in the price is a year’s technical support and free upgrades. The device has been created by Dr Phil Worthington who, having suffered from a bad back for years, created Postureminder to remind himself how to avoid the excruciating pain associated with poor posture. Using a Masters of Enterprise course he’d won through a Umist competition, Worthington set about creating his posture product, testing it on himself and others before its official launch last September. A self-confessed one-man band, Worthington is slowly but surely selling Postureminder. Having started small, he’s now got big health companies, such as Unimprovidence, to test run his product, confident that it will generate a word-of-mouth buzz in the right circles.
