INSOLVENCY PRACTITIONERS

TIM ASKHAM - MAZARS

Image
Manchester based partner of surprisingly large mid-range accountant (turnover £90 million). Extensive experience in solvent corporate restructuring, insolvent company rescue processes, and asset recovery for creditors/shareholders. So should be busy over the next few years.

RIC TRAYNOR - BEGBIES TRAYNOR

Image
Founder and chairman of the quoted insolvency practitioner which is now expanding into forensic accounting and tax consultancy. Not as high profile as in the past, but that is probably down to the fact that he is now one of the wealthiest advisors in the region. Argues that insolvency is not just undertaking, but helping to take pressure off beleaguered management. “What most failed companies get wrong are business basics,” he says. A fan of Phil Collins.

THE OTHERS

BANKERS

MARK BLOWER - LLOYDS TSB

Image
Named Banker of the Year at EN’s Deals of the Year 2007 Awards. Head of acquisition finance in the North West. Headhunted from Rothschilds to build up Manchester operation in 2004 at age of 35. Has since put £600 million-plus debt into 24 transactions. Bristol Rovers supporter. See “Pretax prophets” in the July issue of EN.

TONY DEAN - ROYAL BANK OF SCOTLAND

Image
Managing director of corporate finance for RBS in the North for the past 12 months. Led North West team for the last three-and-a-half years. Headcount increased by 20 per cent since he took over. Department put £325 million debt into the market last year. Pity the bank itself has f***ed things up.

STOCKBROKERS

LAURIE BEEVERS - WH IRELAND

Image
Chief executive, soon to be deputy chairman, ofstockbroker WH Ireland. Read economics and politics at Bristol University and became a member of the London Stock Exchange in 1978. Joined WH Ireland as chief executive in May 1995. His areas of investment specialisation include smaller companies, both in the UK and Australia. Highly regarded.

JON SEAL - RENSBURG SHEPPARDS

Image
Joined Rensburgs in 1988. “Director in Charge” of Liverpool office for last decade-increasing profits by 50 per cent. Oversaw shift from commission to fee-based charging. Main board member since last year. Former Royal Navy man.

INSURANCE

ALEC FINCH - ALEC FINCH GROUP

Image
Founded the firm in 1983 with MBO of provincial operations of Lloyd’s broker Golding Collins. Firm was a founder member of Worldwide Broker Network in 1989 and received Lloyd’s accreditation in 2003. Now operates risk management and employee benefits consultancy as well as commercial lines and Lloyd’s brokerage, and private client “boutique” financial planning service.

PETER WARBURTON - BRIDGE INSURANCE BROKERS

Image
Director of the long-established North West broker which bought Warrington-based Chartwell earlier this year and employs more than 90 people. Specialisms include cyber risks, property and insurance due diligence for mergers and acquisitions.

PROPERTY ADVISORS

PETER GALLAGHER - P3 PROPERTY CONSULTANTS

Image
Stalwart of the region’s property scene with a 35-year career at Dunlop Heywood, latterly as head of agency, under his belt. Wisely jumped ship and set up P3 in November last year, months before new(ish) parent Erinaceous succumbed to insolvency. Played a significant role in Allied London’s Manchester Spinningfields scheme in the early 1990s.

NICK WHIPP - GVA GRIMLEY

Image
Development guru who has done more than most over the past 20 years to transform the skyline of Manchester. Bezzie mates with Sir Howard Bernstein and name-checked by virtually every up-andcoming property agent. Dry sense of humour and a real feel for the undercurrents in the market. If Whipp says commercial property is in trouble you head for the hills. Blotted his copybook, in our eyes, by being in favour of the Greater Manchester congestion charge. We forgive him.

PR AGENTS

DOUGAL PAVER - PAVER SMITH

Image
Colourful Liverpool PR man who has built up one of the region’s leading practices. Has forthright views on the Labour Government which entertainingly were posted on his blog. This was scrapped when it attracted wider attention. Extremely good at what he does and has built a strong team around him. Dominates Merseyside PR. Manchester will only be a matter of time.

SANDY LINDSAY - TANGERINE PR

Image
Engaging but tough boss of one of Manchester’s largest PR practices. One of the few practices to do public affairs. Acts for the North West Regional Assembly, which is unfortunate. One of the few advisors in any profession who is prepared to guarantee her firm’s results.

RITA ROWE - MASON WILLIAMS

Image
We could just as easily have included cofounder John Williams in the list, but Rita Rowe it is. Former Fleet Street journalist who is known for, er, calling a spade a spade. With her partner has built up a quite fantastic consumer PR operation, with offices in Manchester, London and Spain – the last might give you an idea of her retirement planning. The firm is a national rather than regional player and has clients such as Hasbro, Jury’s Inns and even Star Wars.

CHARLES TATTERSALL - CITY PRESS

Image
PR man’s PR man – his City Press operation is a model of how provincial public relations ought to work. Perhaps the reason he has secured major clients such as Brother. Affable and modest. In the words of one client: “knows his onions.”
